china_shop: Vid ALL the things (Vid ALL the things)

I'm having a hard time juggling writing and vidding atm, but what the hell. Via [personal profile] sdwolfpup, thirty questions about vidding, which I am extremely unlikely to answer on a daily basis and will mostly be tagging onto other posts. Given I only have 24 completed vids, this may get a little repetitive. :-)

Day 1 – How did you first get into vidding, and what was the first fandom you vidded? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

I'd wanted to try vidding for years, but I'd always been put off by a) the firm conviction that I Am Not A Visual Person, and b) all the hardware and software technical barriers. I did dabble in no-budget film-making in the nineties: I wrote and directed one and a half short girl-meets-girl films (the half was never finished) and a banana snuff movie, so I'd had some experience with editing, but that was on a Mac, I have a PC, and I was kind of caught between "this is accessible and doable" and "this is magic and only initiates can pull it off."

The truth is I'd never had a vid idea compelling enough to push me past those obstacles. There was no shortage of Due South vids, I am monofannish, and I'm usually busy writing. So.

But people kept turning up to [livejournal.com profile] get__together, our local slash con, with these beautifully put-together pimp reels for shows. Since I get sick of the sound of my own voice very quickly, pimp reels struck me as a fantastic way to convey squee without having to, like, talk. So in 2009, I downloaded a succession of editing software (almost all have 30-day free trials \o/), found one I liked and put together four pimp reels:

Due South: Fraser/Vecchio (part 1 | part 2), Due South: Fraser/Kowalski (part 1 | part 2), Canada 6 Degrees (part 1 | part 2) and Being Human (which we didn't actually use at g/t that year).

And since I had the software and I'd just fallen head over heels for White Collar, I started cutting together a vid to Footloose.

Then my 30-day trial ran out (I can't now remember which program it was, but it was linear, which was driving me nuts). I shopped around for some other software and finally found and fell in love with Sony Vegas. Best Christmas Present Ever!

I rebuilt Footloose from scratch, with a lot of help from my partner, who works in the film industry and is very good at constructive feedback. I was partly spurred on by my need to show everyone how awesome White Collar is, partly by the sheer excitement of vidding and partly by the silliness of the song. Basically, I have discovered that humour and cheesiness will motivate me when nothing else will.

And here I am. :-)

17 – Titles – Do you try to use something different than the song? Why or why not?

18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your vids from?

19 – When you have vid ideas, do you sit down and start vidding right away, or do you write down the idea for further exploration later?

20 – Do you ever get ideas inspired from other people's stories, vids, or art in the same fandom?

23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your vid? Do you have a beta horror story or dream story?

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you rip source? Do you listen to your vid song immediately before vidding, months before vidding, or just while working on it?

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to do for a vid?

27 – Where is your favorite place to vid? Where would be your perfect vidding spot?

29 – What is your current project or projects?

30 – Do you have a favorite vid you've made? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!
